Strictly star Amy Dowden breaks down before heart-breaking chemotherapy update

Amy Dowden on reuniting with Strictly co-stars

Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden broke down in tears before sharing her distress at starting chemotherapy to beat her breast cancer today.

The dancefloor favourite had her 443,000 Instagram followers rooting for their “warrior” as she posted a photo update of herself and revealed the “port” technique of receiving the chemo had been a success.

“I hardly slept [and] broke down in tears as soon as I got in the room [at hospital],” the 32-year-old captioned her picture.

A port had been installed beneath the skin on the side of her chest, a procedure which typically takes up to 45 minutes and allows a patient to receive the dose intravenously.

Amy was also wearing a cold cap in the snap, which reduces blood flow to the scalp in an attempt to keep hair loss to a minimum.

The courageous star revealed that she was “coping” and that, with her cap on, the dreaded treatment “wasn’t as bad as I thought”.

“Just wishing this wasn’t happening to me!” she heartbreakingly wrote, before conceding that the nurses had been “incredible”.

Tagging @jenny.markey, a fellow survivor, she wrote: “I’ve got my fellow pink sister by my side and [she] made sure I walked through the door this morning!”

Her pal reposted the message on her own Stories, with the encouraging caption “Stronger together.”

In a subsequent photo, she clutched a mug of tea which she was drinking to calm her nerves, adding that she was feeling “very emotional… mixed with fear”.

“Like my lovely nurse has said, I just need to think of the end goal,” Amy continued, having previously revealed that she is expected to have an excellent chance of making a full recovery after treatment.

Though devastated that she will be missing out on competing in Strictly this year, she intends to return as soon as possible, and declared last month: “You can take away my boob, but you can’t take dancing away from me!”

“I’ve always set dreams and goals in life, but I guess none like this one (always dance related),” she explained. “But I’m going to see it like this.”

Amy caught up with the entire Strictly crew for an emotional reunion earlier in the summer after her health forced her out of the line-up.

Tearful but delighted, she announced: “I surprised the gang! Just what I needed! Seeing the @bbcstrictly family!”

“[Gorka Marquez and the team] sent me a video with messages like: ‘We miss you, Amy,’ and then a couple of minutes later, I walked in!” she giggled at her impromptu appearance.
