The BIGGEST May releases

The summer is usually a good time to release movies, and May has seen several blockbusters in the past decade.

Last year, of course, there were no theatrical releases due to the lockdown.

Joginder Tuteja takes a look at just how good this month is for Bollywood.

De De Pyaar De, 2019
Box office collection: Rs 103.50 crore

De De Pyaar De turned out to be a Rs 100 crore club success.

Though the Ajay Devgn starrer started slow at Rs 9.42 crore, it gathered steam from the second day itself.

There was widespread appreciation for this romcom, co-starring Rakul Preet Singh and Tabu.

Raazi, 2018
Box office collection: Rs 124 crore

When a film starts at Rs 7.53 crore, you don’t expect it to go past the Rs 75 crore mark.

Raazi did far better than that, as it grew from strength to strength and ended up as a blockbuster.

A Karan Johar production with Meghna Gulzar calling the shots as director, the film was gladly accepted by the audiences, thanks to Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal’s impressive acts.

Hindi Medium, 2017
Box office collection: Rs 69.59 crore

Hindi Medium had a slow opening too at Rs 2.81 crore, but it became so popular among audiences that box office collections steadily picked up.

Starring Irrfan Khan and Saba Qaram, this Saket Chaudhary directed film was a heartwarming affair that brought a smile on the face and tugged at the heartstrings.

Azhar, 2016
Box office collection: Rs 33 crore

One expected Azhar to open a can of worms, but the film was too weak and could not cover the distance commercially.

Emraan Hashmi played Mohammad Azharuddin in this biopic directed by Tony D’Souza.

The film had its moments, but the audiences expected much more.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns, 2015
Box office collection: Rs 152 crore

The second biggest May hit in a decade, Tanu Weds Manu Returns remains a much loved family entertainer.

R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut returned to tell the story of Tanu and Manu after their marriage, and Director Aanand L Rai played it quite smartly by introducing Tanu’s doppelganger Datto as the third angle in the story.

Heropanti, 2014
Box office collection: Rs 53 crore

Tiger Shroff’s big debut Heropanti was a big hit, courtesy Producer Sajid Nadiadwala who made sure that everyone knew about the young kid on the block.

A star was born, and he’s gone on to make several more blockbusters.

His heroine Kriti Sanon has also tasted success in Bollywood.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2013
Box office collection: Rs 188.92 crore

The biggest ever in May blockbuster in a decade, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani arrived eight years ago.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukuone rocked the show with their crackling chemistry in Ayan Mukerji’s directorial venture.

Producer Karan Johar made sure that the film was mounted in the way it deserved.

Pritam provided the chartbuster music.

Ishaqzaade, 2012
Box office collection: Rs 48 crore

Arun Kapoor started his career with the rustic-themed Ishaqzaade.

Though the Habib Faisal directed film was a romantic action, it was by no means a safe affair since Arjun’s character had shades of grey.

He managed to pull it off, and with Parineeti Chopra’s spunky act and hit music, the film was a hit.

Haunted, 2011
Box office collection: Rs 30 crore

The only horror film to feature in the list, Haunted is also the only box office success that Mahaakshay Chakraborty has enjoyed.

Director Vikram Bhatt rechristened Mithun’s son from Mimoh to Mahaakshay with this film.

Haunted boasted of quite a few positives, including melodic songs and 3D treatment.

Badmaash Company, 2010
Box office collection: Rs 35 crore

It was fun to watch Badmaash Company, a fun comedy featuring Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.

But the Yash Raj production could have done better than what it eventually did.

While the songs from this good looking film worked well too, one wonders why Director Parmeet Sethi hasn’t made another film.

The same month saw Hrithik Roshan’s Kites release as well and though it made Rs 50 crore, its high budget meant that it emerged as a major flop.
