Meet the POWER MOMS of Bollywood

There’s a lot we can learn from Ma, and Bollywood knows that only too well.

No wonder there are so many movies dedicated to Mom, with actresses rising to the task only too well.

Joginder Tuteja celebrates Mother’s Day by looking at the moms who have made a big impression in the movies.

Sridevi’s last film Mom saw her play the title character with determination.

As the mother of a teenager girl, who was sexually abused, Sridevi brought on a myriad of emotions the way only she could.

Before that, she had impressed as the laddoo-making mom in English Vinglish, and it’s a pity we will not be able to see such impactful performances any more.

Ramya Krishnan was in great form when she played Sivagami in the blockbuster Baahubali series.

Playing Baahubali’s mother with a fierce love, this was a different Ramya from what Bollywood had seen decades ago, where she was mostly known for her sensual performances.

Vidya Balan is the only actress in current times who has played a mother in the most films while also being a leading lady.

From Shakuntala Devi, Tumhari Sulu, Paa and Kahaani 2, Vidya has picked up strong roles time and again.

Interesting, she played a mother early in her career in Heyy Babyy.

Kareena Kapoor played mom to a teenager a decade ago in Ra.One, a role not too many actresses would take up.

She didn’t shy away from playing a stepmom to three children in We Are Family either.

Most recently, of course, was her act as a mother-to-be in Good Newwz.

Kangana Ranaut has been experimenting with her roles recently too.

In Manikarnika – The Queen of Jhansi, she played the historical character who carried a toddler to the battlefield.

In Panga, she was very natural as the mother of a young boy, who supported in her dream of becoming a national-level kabbadi player.

Kajol has played a mother in many films.

But she gave the character a new light in Helicopter Eela, where she played a dominating mother to a teenager.

On the other hand, in We Are Family, she played a protective mother of three children. She played mom in My Name Is Khan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior too.

No one can do this better than Tabu!

As a mother of grown up children, who chooses to green-light the second wife for her ex-husband, Tabu was amazing not just in light-hearted scenes but also during a crucial juncture of De De Pyaar De, where she took a balanced approach to justify the separation with her husband.

Tabu also played ‘a cool’ mom in Jawaani Jaaneman.

Only six years older than Ranveer Singh, Amruta Subhash was very convincing as his mother in Gully Boy.

Zoya Akhtar’s film required each of the actors to look like they were born in the slums and Amruta made sure her persona totally suited the character.

Shefali Shah is five years younger than Akshay Kumar and yet, she played his mother in Waqt,

She was very convincing in the role too!

She played mom to Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh in Dil Dhadakne Do as well, even though the age difference wasn’t much this time round too.

Priyanka is 10 years younger than Shefali while Ranveer is 13 years younger.

If there is one actress who got a new lease in her career in recent years, it’s Neena Gupta.

It all started with Badhaai Ho where she was practically the leading lady of the film as Ayushmann Khurranna’s mother.

Later, she became his prospective mother-in-law in Shubh Mangal Zyaada Savdhan.

Last year, she played Kangana Ranaut’s mother in Panga.
