Whether Bikini or Ghoonghat: Priyanka Gandhi on hijab row

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter, “Whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear. This right is guaranteed by the Indian constitution. Stop harassing women.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear.   The politician added that a girl can choose to wear a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab.  Her comments come amid the ongoing hijab row in Karnataka owing to which all  the educational institutions have been shut for  the 3 days. Priyanka linked the issue with the Congress’s poll slogan of the  women empowerment in Uttar Pradesh ‘Ladki hoon lad sakti hoon’.

Last week Congress MP Rahul Gandhi spoke out in support of students’ right to wear the hijab in class room tweeting: “By letting students’ hijab come in the way of the education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of  the country India. Ma Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn’t differentiate.”

The protests against  the college students’ right to wear a hijab in classes have erupted in several towns in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru, Udupi,  and Mandya districts over the past few weeks.
