Man held for raping woman on pretext of marriage, duping her of over Rs 5 crore

The victim had met the accused on a match-making website and exchanged phone numbers. The accused and the officer then started meeting each other and the accused used to come to Mumbai to meet her.

Mumbai Police have arrested a 38-year-old man after a businesswoman accused him of raping her on the pretext of marriage, duping her of cash and valuables worth Rs 5.19 crore and blackmailing her.

Police said a case was registered under relevant sections of rape, voyeurism, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal intimidation after the woman approached the police on Monday.

The accused was arrested from his house in Andheri on Tuesday, police said.

The complainant, in her statement to police, said that she met the accused through a common friend in August 2018.

“The two exchanged numbers and started talking frequently. They entered into a relationship sometime around August 2018,” said an
investigator.

“As the two were planning to get married, the accused, under the pretext of starting a new business for their future, took Rs 3.69 crore cash and valuables worth Rs 1.5 crore from the complainant,” said an officer.

When the duo parted ways in December 2019, the accused refused to return the money and started demanding more cash from her, said police.
“When the woman was threatened that the accused would post her nude pictures (taken when the two were in a relationship) on social media, she got scared and approached the police,” said an officer.

The accused was produced in a local court, which remanded him to police custody till June 21.

An officer privy to the investigation said, “We are trying to recover the money and valuables that the accused had taken from her. Searches are being carried at the house of the accused.”
