SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Wife of ex-US ambassador has a Sting in her saucy tale as she reveals her relentless pursuit of the rock star in her upcoming book
First, Sasha Swire caused a furore with her candid memoirs about life as the wife of a government minister.
Now, Ann Bracken — who is married to Britain’s former ambassador to the United States, Lord (Robin) Renwick — is shaking up the diplomatic world with an indiscreet account of her life with the great and good in London and Washington.
American-born Lady Renwick’s amusing disclosures include being ticked off by the late James Bond star Sir Sean Connery and a relentless pursuit of the rock star Sting.
‘Invited to re-cross the Atlantic [back to Britain], the main reason I agreed to do so was to bring me closer to my long-standing idol, Sting,’ she writes in her new book, How To Break Into The White House.

‘I hopefully assumed Sting would be both accessible and not impervious to my charms, but I discovered to my distress that Trudie [Styler, his wife] keeps him on a very short leash.
‘I had a very near miss one evening at the swanky Nobu eaterie on Park Lane, only for the head waiter to throw himself into a protective position in front of Sting in the nick of time,’ recalls Bracken.
Bracken admits that she considered a boob job — visiting a cosmetic surgery clinic in London.
‘Confronted, as I frequently am, with ladies whose chests are slightly more provocative than my own, I headed for St John’s Wood to check out the options,’ she writes.

‘The surgeon suggested some improvement but reassured me by saying if he bumped into me on a Saturday night he would thank his lucky stars. I was so touched that I failed to think of reporting him to the British Medical Association.’
Her confrontation with Connery took place at a restaurant.
‘I found my neighbour coughing in an exaggerated fashion and trying to swat the fumes of my illicit cigarette away with his napkin,’ she says.
‘This seemed to me inappropriately squeamish behaviour for someone with a licence to kill.’

Pilloried as dippy Edina Monsoon in the 90s sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, former PR guru Lynne Franks now regrets she didn’t play along.
‘I wish I’d taken it with more humour but I was embarrassed, I was hurt. I was offered a guest role and turned it down. I should have taken it, been able to laugh at myself more, I can see it now for what it is — a very funny character in a very funny programme.’
St Trinian’s star Tamsin Egerton, who has three daughters with her partner, Pearl Harbor hunk Josh Hartnett, admits the pressure of parenting has driven her to seek comfort in sugary snacks.
‘Living with three under-fives 24/7 is certainly stressful and chaotic — but ultimately a gift.
‘They breathe energy and motivation into every moment of every day. Without that, I think I’d have struggled much more,’ says the 32-year-old (left), who lives with Hartnett in London.
But she admits: ‘That’s not to say that I don’t hide in a cupboard stuffing my face full of chocolate just for mere seconds of peace. I think we all have coping strategies that sometimes work and sometimes don’t.’

Gardening has proved a dangerous lockdown hobby for Olympic diver Tom Daley and his husband, the Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who has injured himself at their London home.
‘We were doing some gardening and trimming back lavender — I know we were meant to have done that a while ago,’ explains Tom, 26.
‘He was cutting with normal kitchen scissors and getting carried away and, all of a sudden, he chopped the top of his finger off.
‘When I say the top of his finger, I mean like, a third of his nail down.’
Line Of Duty star Martin Compston, who plays DS Steve Arnott in the BBC drama, reveals his wife of four years, Tianna Flynn, has installed a cardboard cut-out of him at their home in Las Vegas to keep her company when he’s away.
‘I didn’t make her last birthday party, so her friends bought her a cardboard cut-out of me as a standby,’ says the 36-year-old Scot.
‘She keeps it behind her bar. When I come down for a glass of water at night, it scares the s*** out of me every time. I hate the thing.’

‘He’s a good boy. He’s so clever; very serious, very sensitive.’
