COVID-19 containment zones in Tamil Nadu as on Dec 19
There are a total of 83 COVID-19 containment zones across the State, including the one in the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) campus here, as on December 19, according to the Tamil Nadu government.

BJP-backed candidates win 15 GPs
Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat said on Wednesday that of the 19 gram panchayats coming under the jurisdiction of Udupi Assembly segment, 15 panchayats have been won by candidates supported by the BJP, in full majority.
“This is clear win for development of Udupi constituency,” he said in a statement.
Former cricketer joins BJP

Former cricketer and commentator L. Sivaramakrishnan joined the BJP on Wednesday, before a meeting of party coordinators. He joined the BJP in the presence of BJP national general secretary C.T. Ravi. Actor Subbu Panchu Arunachalam and a few members from the DMK also joined the party.

Mukkombu to be closed today
Mukkombu, a popular picnic spot near Tiruchi, will remain closed on New Year on Fiday.
The park, which was ordered to close from Thursday evening, will not open on Friday as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the pandemic, Collector S. Sivarasu said in a press release.
He also urged people to wear face masks, follow personal distancing and wash their hands frequently.
Canara Bank raises ₹1,635 crore
Canara Bank said it has raised capital by issuing Additional Tier-1 Bonds to the tune of ₹1,635 crore at 8.50% coupon on December 31. “This will help the bank to increase its capital adequacy ratio,” the bank said in a statement.
Retired judge named to head SHRC
The State has named retired High Court judge S. Baskaran as the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission. He assumed office on Thursday.
The order from Governor Banwarilal Purohit said he would head the body for three years or till he attained 70 years of age, whichever was earlier.

R. Ramasubbu, Editor, Dinamalar, Tiruchi, has been unanimously elected president of the Tiruchi District Cricket Association for 2020-23.

Pumpset prices to increase
Members of Kovai Power Driven Pumps and Spares Manufacturers Association have decided to increase the price of agriculture, domestic and industry pumps they make by minimum 15 %.
A release from the Association said the prices of raw materials shot up during the last two months and the manufacturers had no option, but to increase the prices. The higher price of the pumpset would come into effect from Friday.
IAS officers promoted
The Tamil Nadu government on Friday promoted seven IAS officers of the 1997 batch to the grade of Principal Secretary. The officers are D. Karthikeyan, S. Swarna, Ashish Vachhani, Pankaj Kumar Bansal, Satyabrata Sahoo, Har Sahay Meena and Beela Rajesh.
New Madras High Court CJ to assume charge on Monday
Governor Banwarilal Purohit is expected to administer the oath of office to Madras High Court Chief Justice designate Sanjib Banerjee at the Raj Bhavan on Monday. Immediately after the ceremony, Advocate General Vijay Narayan would accord a formal welcome at the High Court campus, according to notifications issued by its Registrar General, C. Kumarappan.

Killed in wall collapse
TIRUCHI
A 60-year-old agricultural labourer was killed when the wall of his house collapsed at Maruthur near Samayapuram on Saturday.
Govindan was sleeping when the incident occurred. He was trapped under the rubble and died on the spot. The wall was said to have been weakened by the recent rain, according to police.
Gold seized at Chennai airport
About 621 grams of gold worth ₹31.87 lakh was seized by Chennai Air Customs at Chennai airport.
Thameem Ansari Samsudeen and Jahabar Ali Abdul Wahab, who arrived from Dubai, had concealed gold paste inside their inner wear.
Train services to KIA begin on Monday
Air passengers and employees of Kempegowda International Airport will be able to take a train to work from Monday. South Western Railways will operate trains to KIA from KSR, Cantonment and Yelahanka stations. Tickets will be priced in the range of ₹10-₹15.

TASMAC shop supervisor assaulted
M. Ravi, 46, the supervisor of a TASMAC shop at Solaiazhagupuram has complained that the bar owner, T. Ravi, 44, of Villapuram assaulted him after he refused to pay money to him.
Jaihindpuram police have arrested the bar owner and two others for assault and preventing the government servant from discharging his duty. The police have also booked the supervisor in a counter case lodged by the bar owner.
