Four extra days of races in December cancelled

Due to consistent heavy rainfall rendering the underfoot conditions of the race track not conducive for racing, the stewards of the Madras Race Club have decided to cancel the first, second, eighth and ninth extra days of races to be held on Dec. 2, Dec. 3, Dec. 10 and Dec. 11 respectively.

Erode logs 68 new cases of COVID-19

Erode district on Saturday reported 68 COVID-19 positive cases. As of Saturday, the district reported 829 active cases.

In Salem, 53 cases and one death were reported. According to health officials, 47 cases were indigenous and 22 cases were reported in Salem Corporation limits.

In Namakkal, 47 COVID-19 positive cases were reported. As per bulletin, all cases were indigenous.

Speaker discharged from hospital

Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, who tested positive for COVID on November 24 and was admitted to a corporate hospital here, was discharged on Saturday. According to the Speaker’s office, he was discharged as he had no other health issues and tested negative. He was advised home quarantine for some days.

Three members of the DMK, who were recently elected to the Rajya Sabha, took oath on the opening day of the winter session of Parliament on Monday.

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who is also chairman of the Rajya Sabha, called on the three members Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu, K.R.N. Rajesh Kumar, and M.M. Abdullah to take oath.

Taxi driver found murdered

Madurai

M. Pandian, 35, of Periyakulam in Theni district, a call-taxi driver, was found murdered near Alanganallur on Tuesday morning. The police said that the body bore multiple cut injuries and his throat was slit open. The body was found on an agricultural land at Kottaimedu.

The taxi was also missing. Alanganallur police are investigating.

NMDC slashes iron ore prices

NMDC has reduced iron ore prices by ₹750 for a tonne of Lump and by ₹200 for the same quantity of Fines. Effective November 30, the new prices are ₹5,200 per tonne for Lump Ore and ₹4,560 for Fines, the country’s largest iron producer said in a filing on Tuesday. NMDC had last changed the prices in October to ₹5,950 and ₹4,760 respectively.

Ray Illingworth reveals cancer diagnosis

Former England captain Ray Illingworth revealed he is receiving treatment for cancer. The 89-year-old, who led England to an Ashes triumph in Australia in 1970-71, is undergoing radiotherapy for oesophageal cancer. Illingworth said he was hoping for a bit of luck.

Peafowl census at KBR Park

A peafowl census at KBR Park by the Forest department has revealed that there are a total of 512 peafowl in the national park.

NGOs such as Deccan Birders, Friends of Snakes Society and WWF were part of the effort to conduct the census.

10,418 units of blood collected in 288 camps

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations and the Young Messengers (youth wing) collected 10,418 units of blood in 288 camps organised across the country to celebrate Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s 96th birth anniversary. The camp was held from November 21 to 28 across 26 States under the supervision of trained professionals.

Hot air balloon fest in Feb.

The Tourism Department has planned to conduct a hot air balloon festival in February 2022 in the State. Pandemic-restrictions permitting, this will be conducted, said M. Mathiventhan, Minister for Tourism.
