Two students are reported to have died while six others are missing after a country boat carrying 30 people, mostly students, capsized in the Godavari at Pasuvula Lanka in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. Twenty-two persons have been rescued.
The boat was en route to Saladivari Palem from Pasuvula Lanka when the accident occurred around 5 p.m.
Initially, 40 people were thought to have been on the boat, which sank after hitting the pillar of a bridge under construction amid swirling waters of the river.
Teams of the State and the National Disaster Response Forces and naval divers from Visakhapatnam are searching for the remaining seven who jumped into the waters.
Most of those on the boat were school and college students returning to their villages. The children had participated in a drive to plant saplings on their school premises at Pasuvula Lanka .
All the students were residents of Saladivaripalem and Serilanka island villages, with boats being the only mode of transport to school.
A bridge to the mainland has been under construction for the last six years.
