A youth who allegedly threatened to upload private pictures of a Delhi-based woman on social media was arrested from Kolkata after she complained on the Delhi Commission for Women’s helpline, the DCW said in a statement
The Commission said the woman called its 181 helpline on December 23 claiming that she was being blackmailed by the West Bengal resident.
She told the helpline staff that he was blackmailing multiple other women too. “The woman told her family about the blackmail but they asked her to keep quiet fearing a ‘bad name’. She sought police help too but in vain,” said statement added.
Soon after receiving the call, a helpline counsellor went to a police station with her and registered a complaint. After DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal spoke to the Deputy Commissioner of Police concerned, a first information report was registered on December 24 at K.N. Katju Marg police station.
Accused gets bail
“A Delhi Police team traced the location of the blackmailer and went to Kolkata to arrest him. He was arrested on December 27 and brought to Delhi. However, he was given bail by a court and approached the victim once again. The Commission intends to support her in filing an application in court for cancellation of his bail,” the DCW said.
