Telangana govt protests 'One-nation, one-registration' initiated by Centre

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao conveyed his denial towards the Centre’s move ‘One nation-one registration’ proposed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. KCR also seeked withdrawal of the initiation.

During the Union Budget 2022-23 session, the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced plans to implement this initiative.

According to the sources, KCR strongly feels that the Centre’s move would retrench the powers of states. He notified that the earnings through stamps and registrations remained as the major revenue source for state governments.

The Telangana government enhanced registration charges and stamp duties in July last year and enhanced the market value of lands two times within a year in July 2021 and February 1, 2022.

States have lost their power to impose sales tax/VAT on various products barring fuel and alcohol, after the implementation of GST from July 2017.

Currently, states are waiting for the centre to reimburse their tax share after GST collections and  many states grumble of losing their revenue collections after GST existence.

Official sources claim that the TRS-led government in Telangana is engaged in a political slugfest with the BJP-led government at the centre, accusing it of reducing the powers of states in the name of power reforms, farm laws etc. The government would not want to lose its powers on stamps and registrations, lands and properties to the centre in the name of ‘One nation-one registration’.
