Grand opening

The Opening Ceremony of East Zone Sainik Schools Sports and Co-curricular Championship was held at Sainik School Goalpara on July 10, 2018. Maj Gen Arun Kumar, GOC HQ 51 Sub Area and Chairman Local Board of Administration of Sainik School Goalpara graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Maj Gen Bhaskar Kalita, YSM, GOC 56 Infantry Div and an alumnus of the school was the Guest of Honour.

This mega sporting event is hosted by Sainik School Goalpara on behalf of Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence from 10 – May 14-18. Four Sainik Schools namely, SS Purulia (West Bengal), SS Imphal (Manipur), SS Punglwa (Nagaland) and the host school will participate in various sports and co-curricular activities. Around 290 cadets will participate in various sports activities like Football (Jrs& Sub-Jrs), Volleyball, Basketball and Hockey. In Co-curricular activities they will compete in English and Hindi Debate, Quiz and a Variety Entertainment Show.

Zonal Championships are conducted every year in five Zones namely East, West, South, North and Central Zone from which the best team for each game is selected for Inter Zonal (National) Championship held subsequently.

A spectacular march past followed by oath taking ceremony mesmerised the spectators. Cdt Himshikhar Kashyap, School Captain, Sainik School Goalpara administered the oath.

The Chief Guest met all the participating teams and wished them luck. He also inaugurated the Knowledge Hub (a computer based self-learning centre) in the school. The opening ceremony was followed by 100th LBA Meeting of Sainik School Goalpara, chaired by Maj Gen Arun Kumar.

An SBI ATM was inaugurated by Maj Gen Bhaskar Kalita at the Rhino Gate of the school. This is the only SBI ATM between Dudhnoi and Goalpara town covering a distance of 35 km and will cater to the requirements of the locals of Matia, Mornoi, Nepalikhuti and Dubapara. A regimental lunch was organised in honour of the guests and invitees.

In Football (Sub-Jr) Goalpara defeated Punglwa by 4-1, Imphal defeated Purulia by 13-0; in Football (Jr)Punglwa defeated Imphalby 1-0, Goalpara defeated Purulia by 2-0; in Hockey Goalpara defeated Punglwa by 7-0, Purulia defeated Imphal by 7-0; in Volleyball Goalpara defeated Imphal by 2-0, Purulia defeated Punglwa by 2-1 and in Basketball Goalpara defeated Punglwa by 50-35 and Purulia defeated Imphal by 59-32.
