As per the initial enquiry by the police, the man had allegedly stolen three bovine animals from Rongsang Ajirigri village and was later apprehended by the villagers.
A 49-year-old man from Assam was lynched over a case of alleged cattle theft in a village in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district on Friday, police said.
According to Siddharth Ambedkar, SP, South West Garo Hills district, the police received information that the villagers of Adugre village, under Betasing outpost, had apprehended a cattle thief early on Friday morning.
“Immediately, a team left for the village. However, on reaching the spot, we found one person in a seriously injured condition on the ground,” said Ambedkar. The person was shifted to a hospital, but was declared brought dead.
The deceased has been identified as Manik Lal from Mankachar in Assam’s South Salmara district. “The body has been sent for post mortem and the matter is under investigation,” said Ambedkar.
