Officers of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized 2.6 kg of gold from 11 passengers, who came by different overseas flights, at the international airport here on Monday.
Barring two, who came from Singapore by Scoot Airlines, the remaining passengers arrived from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia and Malindo Air flights.
Airport sources said all of them had gold concealed in their person in order to evade customs duty.
They were detained on suspicion and checks by the Customs Air Intelligence Unit led to the seizure of gold in small biscuits and in the form of chains.
Six of the detained passengers were from Tiruchi, three from Chennai and one each from Tirunelveli and Madurai. The value of the seized gold was put at ₹ 90.35 lakh. Further investigation was on, the sources added.
