Farmers have been promised a lot by the political parties before elections, but are given the least after the exercise, according to YSR Congress Party’s farmers’ wing chairman M.V.S. Nagireddy.
Addressing the media here on Friday, Mr. Nagireddy came down heavily on the BJP ruling at the Centre and the TDP ruling in the State for “neglecting” the farmers.While the TDP failed to fulfil its promise of implementing the Swaminathan Commission Report, the BJP, without any promise, short- changed the farmers, he charged.Instead of using the comprehensive cost of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices (C2) to calculate the cost of production, the Modi Government used the actual cost (A2). The Central government failed to show the farmers the love it had for industrialists while fixing the cost of projection, Mr. Nagireddy said.
Farmers would suffer severe losses unless the MSP was increased, he said. Analysing the increase in the MSP of different crops, Mr. Nagireddy said the MSP of minor food grains had been increased considerably because their their production was relatively less. While there was a good hike in the MSP of wheat, the increase in the MSP of paddy, which was cultivated on a large-scale in South India, was comparatively less.
Now that the elections were fast approaching, the Centre and the State were announcing hefty increase in the MSP of paddy and other crops, Mr Nagireddy pointed.
