Work on Chinese net renovation launched

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran has said that protecting the Chinese nets, the hallmark of Fort Kochi, is tantamount to protecting the culture of the place.

He was speaking after inaugurating the renovation of Chinese nets at Fort Kochi. The long-pending project has now been infused with a fresh lease of life. Adequate wood was made available. The project should be made a reality at the earliest, he said.

The renovation work is being implemented retaining the traditional richness of Chinese nets. The Tourism Department has allocated Rs. 1.50 crore for the project, and 11 nets will be renovated using the funds. Around nine metre-long teak poles have been provided for the work.

K.J. Maxy, MLA; and Mayor Soumini Jain were presented with the replica of Chinese nets. Mr. Maxy, who is also the chairman of Homestay Owners Welfare Association Kerala, submitted a memorandum to the Minister seeking redressal of problems faced by the homestay sector.
