Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan and Minister for Environment K.C. Karuppannan in the presence of Collector S. Prabhakar opened the sluices at Kodiveri Dam and released water into Arakankottai – Thadapalli canal for irrigation here on Thursday.
A total of 24,504 acre, including 17,654 acre under the Thadapalli canal and 6,850 acre under the Arakankottai canal in the old ayacuts would be benefited because of the water release that is expected for 120 days with a 40 days break.
Officials of the Public Works Department said that water would be released from July 12 to July 31 (20 days), August 11 to August 25 (15 days), September 5 to September 19 (15 days), October 30 to October 14 (15 days) and from October 25 to November (15 days). Water would be stopped for the rest of 40 days, they added.
But farmers demanded 135 days of water release and picketed the Office of the PWD in Gobichettipalayam here on Wednesday. Led by Subi. Thalapathy, president of Thadapalli – Arakankottai Pasana Sabai, farmers said that they need continuous water supply for 135 days as the water level at Bhavani Sagar dam is 82 feet.
PWD officials urged them to submit their grievance as petition.
