Two vehicle thieves have been arrested with the help of a global positioning system (GPS) device, which was fitted in a car that they had stolen, the police said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Balwinder Singh and Lav Raghav, were arrested from Ghaziabad. They are residents of Panchsheel Vihar in Malviya Nagar.
The police have recovered the stolen car and a motorcycle from their possession.
The police said that on July 6, cab driver Ajay Arya reported that his white sedan car was stolen from in front of Rajdoot Hotel. A team was formed to trace to the vehicle.
“The owner of the stolen car informed the police that it had a GPS device installed in it.
With the help of the device, the location of the car was traced in front of Nathu Sweets, beside NH-24, Khoda Colony, Makanpur in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad. The car was found parked and abandoned,” said DCP (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal.
He said that a trap was laid. Policemen in plain clothes kept waiting for the accused to arrive at the spot to pick up the stolen car. Around 20 hours later, a man arrived at the spot and got into the car. He was nabbed by the police. The man was later identified as Balwinder. His associate, who was at a distance, managed to flee.
Balwinder revealed the hideout of the other accused, Lav, following which the latter was arrested.
“The accused said they are neighbours. They started stealing vehicles in order to earn quick money and lead a lavish life. They used to sell the stolen vehicles in Uttar Pradesh. They had been involved in cases of motor vehicle thefts earlier as well,” said Mr. Biswal.
