About 35 kg of banned tobacco products were seized by the city police on Tuesday night. Three persons were arrested and a moped used by them was seized.
According to police, Okkaram (27), a resident of Chinna Kammala Street, and Devaram (19), a resident of Big Bazaar Street, were intercepted by the police on Big Bazaar Street. The duo riding a moped was found to be transporting gunny bags that contained various banned tobacco products valued at around Rs. 50,000.
They were detained and questioned. Based on the information provided by them, Mangalram (25) of Chinna Kammala Street was also arrested. All three of them were charged with possession of the banned substance for sale. Gandhi Market police have registered a case.
A.Amalraj, City Police Commissioner, has warned of stern action against those found in possession of or selling banned tobacco products. He also appealed to residents to pass on information regarding the sale of such products.
