The search operation for the youth who went missing during heavy rains near Kugre in Koppa taluk on Tuesday night continued on Thursday.
Ashok, 21, is believed to have fallen into a stream from Hullinagadde Bridge on Horanadu-Sringeri Road while he was riding a bike. During the search operation on Wednesday, his bike was found.
A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined local policemen and Fire and Emergency Services personnel in the search operation on Thursday. Hundreds of people gathered at the spot to witness it. Till late in the evening, there was no breakthrough.
Locals have blamed negligence on the part of people’s representatives and officials for the incident. The bridge across the stream had no crash guard. When Deputy Commissioner M.K. Srirangaiah visited the spot on Wednesday, locals appealed to him to improve the condition of the road and strengthen the bridge.
The district received an average of 47 mm of rain, as against the normal rainfall of 17.1 mm, on Wednesday. The highest rainfall of 154 mm was recorded at Vidyaranyapura near Sringeri. The district administration had declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Sringeri, Koppa, N.R. Pura, and Mudigere taluks on the day.
Owing to heavy rains, cases of landslide were reported from Kannahadlu village in Mudigere taluk. The Hirebailu-Balehole road, which connects over 10 villages, was blocked because of landslides.
