Proposal for Wildlife Act amendment

A high-level meeting convened by Forest Minister K. Raju here on Monday decided to make a recommendation to the government for an amendment to the Wildlife Conservation Act, 1972 to tackle the menace caused by crop-raiding wild pigs.

The meeting held to discuss the spate of attacks by wild animals in Malampuzha and other parts of Palakkad district proposed to shift the wild pig from Schedule 3 to Schedule 4 in the Act as a short-term move to address the threat faced by farmers from the marauding animals. The amendment would remove the legal hurdles to shooting or trapping wild pig, the meeting observed.
