PIL opposes hawkers at Parry’s Corner

Activist ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy has filed a public interest litigation petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation to revoke the identity cards issued to a host of hawkers on NSC Bose Road at Parry’s Corner.

In his petition, Mr. Ramaswamy has complained about the Marina and Elliot’s beaches having been encroached by hawkers. He has said that he had filed a PIL petition in 2015 to evict scores of hawkers on NSC Bose Road and obtained favourable orders from the court.

Then, the police as well as the corporation officials removed all the encroachments.

He was shocked to see hundreds of hawkers again on the road possessing identity cards issued by the Corporation under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act of 2014.

Wondering how such identity cards could have been issued by the civic body in the absence of the statutory Vending Committee, as contemplated under the Act, he has sought a direction to the Commissioner to revoke the ID cards.
