Vigilance sleuths on Thursday carried out raids on the residence and office of rebel Congress activist and East Eleri grama panchayat vice president James Panthamakkal following complaints that the latter held assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The raids, carried out by senior officials of the Kozhikode-based Vigilance Special Cell, began at 6.50 a.m. at his residence near the hilly township of Chittaarikkal and at his office.
The Vigilance officials did not divulge details of the search. The raid was conducted on a complaint filed by an RTI activist with the State Vigilance Director as the local Vigilance officials did not have any clue on the impending search, sources said.
Mr. Panthamakkal had floated Democratic Development Front following lingering differences over seat-sharing equations ahead of the 2015 local body elections as his outfit wrested the mantle of the grama panchayat by seeking support from the CPI(M).
Meanwhile, Mr. Panthamakkal’s wife had lodged a written complaint with the Chaittarikkal police alleging that Rs. 22,000 in cash kept in his bedroom was found missing during the raid, the police said.
