Over one tonne of ganja was seized by the police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district in the early hours of Sunday while it was being smuggled to Haryana in a truck.
Three persons from Kelanga under Bhiwani district of Haryana were arrested. The truck was intercepted at the Rajalkonda forest gate near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border. According to the police, the seized contraband is worth over Rs. 50 lakh.
According to Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena, the contraband was found in 34 packets hidden inside the container truck. During interrogation, the arrested revealed that that they had procured the stock from the remote Darakonda area under the Chitrakonda police station limits.
According to police sources, drug mafia from outside Odisha finance illegal ganja plantations in the remote areas of the Maoist-infested Malkangiri district. The harvested contraband is smuggled outside the State.
On July 4, ganja being smuggled to Maharashtra in a fake 108 ambulance was seized by the police in the Mathili police station area of the district with the arrest of two persons.
