‘One nation, one election possible only with consensus’

Conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly will be possible only after reaching a political consensus and making appropriate amendments to the Constitution, BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday after paying tributes at freedom fighter Azhagumuthu Kone’s memorial at Kattalankulam in Thoothukudi district on his birth anniversary, Mr. Bhupender said simultaneous conduct of Lok Sabha, Assembly and local body elections could save a lot money for the country and facilitate easier security arrangements.

On the BJP’s political prospects in Tamil Nadu, he said party president Amit Shah had made it clear that the BJP would provide a clean and transparent administration in Tamil Nadu.

On BJP leaders’ repeated charges of protests against development projects being supported by Naxalites, Union Minister of State for Shipping Pon. Radhakrishnan said those who were working against the development of Tamil Nadu were extremists and Naxalites.

“The State government should take appropriate action against them,” he said.
