Actor and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna inaugurated the Dr. Vicente Ferrer Digital Library here on Friday morning.
Unveiling the plaque of the state-of-the-art facility, which has been developed with support from the Rural Development Trust that Ferrer founded, Mr. Balakrishna said that every library should function as a centre for propagating cultures and societal development.
He further said the State government had been focusing on reviving libraries across the State with intervention of technology to suit the needs of people, especially youngsters preparing for competitive exams and higher education.
Outlining the facilities available at the library including scanners and digitised editions of books, Mr. Balakrishna urged the youth to make best use of the facility.
Touted as the first digital library in both the Telugu-speaking States, the facility was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.30 crore.
Earlier, Mr. Balakrishna had unveiled statues of former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao and Dr. Vicente Ferrer, who was a Jesuit missionary, besides speaking on the benefits of cultivating the habit of reading. Information and Public Relations Minister Kalava Srinivasulu, Chief Whip Palle Raghunatha Reddy and District Collector G. Veerapandian were present.
