Former India cricket captain Anil Kumble will unveil the statue of Colonel C.K. Nayudu, India’s first Test cricket captain, on the campus of Machilipatnam Municipality’s swimming pool on July 24. The statue was languishing on the Collectorate premises for the past one year.
Sports Minister Kollu Ravindra told
over phone on Tuesday the site at the civic body’s swimming pool area had been selected and procedures were being followed for unveiling the statue. “The present location to install the statue will have a mini stadium in future,” added Mr. Ravindra. Currently, the statue is under the conservation of the Revenue Department at the Collectorate.
Anil Kumble will lay a foundation stone for the indoor stadium and swimming pool proposed to be developed in the 13-acre area at Goshala on July 24. “The Union government has sanctioned Rs. 13 crore for the stadium project. The swimming pool will be constructed by spending Rs. 5 crore while Rs. 8 crore will be allotted for the indoor stadium,” said Mr. Ravindra. On the other hand, the State government will develop a 400-metre running track on the same ground apart from other necessary facilities.
