After being formally recognised by the Election Commission of India, Makkal Needhi Maiam founder and president Kamal Haasan hoisted the party’s flag on Thursday here at his party office at Eldams Road in Alwarpet.
Announcing the appointment of members to important party posts such as vice-president, treasurer and general secretary, Mr. Haasan said, “Ku. Gnanasambandham, Arunachalam and Suresh have been appointed vice-president, general secretary and treasurer of Makkal Needhi Maiam.”
He added that the high-level committee, formed temporarily after the party’s launch, would be disbanded. “Sripriya, Kameela Nasser, Bharathi Krishnakumar, C.K. Kumaravel, R. Rangarajan, A.G. Maurya, S. Murthy, R. Thangavel and Sowri Rajan will be part of the party’s executive committee. I hope that party cadres will extend their support to them,” he said. He said Tamil Nadu had been divided into four zones. “We are still interviewing people and we are yet to complete the process. We will also announce the office-bearers for each zone. Around 24 party wings such as farmers, advocates, and traders’ wings will also be formed,” he said.
Mr. Haasan rejected the notion that the party was being built from the top.
