INLD-BSP combine to observe ‘bandh’ on Aug. 18

Leader of the Opposition in Haryana Assembly Abhay Singh Chautala on Tuesday said that unless a satisfactory assurance is given by the State government on the issue of completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal, the Indian National Lok Dal would not let the upcoming session of the State Assembly function smoothly.

Mr. Chautala was addressing party workers in Bhiwani during the INLD’s ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation, which has been launched to press for immediate completion of the SYL canal and the Dadupur-Nalvi canal.

“We will disrupt the House proceedings that are slated to start from August 17. The INLD and its alliance partner Bahujan Samaj Party have decided to observe a State-wide bandh (shutdown) on August 18,” said Mr. Chautala.

The INLD leader said the business community of the State has already assured of its participation in the bandh in support of the farmers’ cause. “I urge people to give the alliance the kind of mandate they gave in 1987 to make sure that the State’s share from river waters flows through the SYL canal,” he said.

INLD’s State president Ashok Arora accused the BJP-led State government of failing on all fronts, particularly in maintaining law and order and protecting the interests of the farming community. “Farmers have been betrayed by the BJP government,” he said, adding that the MSP hike for kharif crops was inadequate.
