UP: HC summons DM, SP after PIL says Christians being harassed

The Allahabad high court on Friday directed the Kaushambi district magistrate and the superintendent of police to remain present on July 31 during a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition, which alleges that certain people were not permitting the members of the Christian community to attend Sunday school and offer Sunday prayers.

The bench comprising justice Govind Mathur and justice CD Singh passed the order on a PIL filed by Roshan Lal and 44 others, who are resident of Kaushambi.

The bench further directed that the petitioners may also file a rejoinder affidavit to the counter- affidavit filed on behalf of the respondents by the next date of hearing.

The petition alleged that the district administration was not taking adequate care to protect the people who had faith in Christianity. The petitioners also alleged they were not allowed to practise their religion.

The petitioners said they approached the district administration with their complaint, asking the administration to stop anti-social elements from troubling them, but no action was taken.

The court has fixed July 31 as the next date of hearing.
