Greater Hyderabad receives sub-normal rainfall

Rainfall in most parts of Greater Hyderabad has been lower than normal this monsoon though the State’s rainfall receipts are surplus. The India Meteorological Department’s rainfall statistics up to July 11 suggest that the State has received above-normal rainfall, but Hyderabad district, which is the core of GHMC, and Malkajigiri that comprises northern and eastern parts of the city, have received sub-normal rainfall. The data suggests the Hyderabad district received 14% below normal rainfall and Malkajigiri 19% deficient.

On Saturday, many parts of the city recorded light rainfall under 15.5 mm. In Telangana, southern districts and some mandals in north-western districts received moderate rainfall exceeding 15.6 mm. Pullur in Gadwal recorded 30 mm, the highest for any mandal in the State on Saturday. The IMD stated that cyclonic circulation over northern Chhattisgarh caused by low pressure over north-west Bay of Bengal has been causing rain across the State.
