The all-party meeting convened by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) here on Thursday to discuss the awarding of contract by the Coimbatore Corporation to a foreign company to monitor the drinking water management system demanded immediate cancellation of the contract.
A resolution passed at the meeting participated by the leaders of Congress, MDMK, CPI (M), CPI, TPDK, VCK, KMDK, MNMK, IUML and Adhi Tamilar Peravai accused the Corporation of awarding the contract without conducting public hearing in the absence of elected representatives in the local body. The meeting said that even the Opposition parties were not allowed to discuss the issue in the Assembly.
It was decided to distribute pamphlets from July 23 to July 30 demanding cancellation of the contract awarded to Suez company and to lay siege to the Corporation on July 31.
The meeting also urged the government to begin the construction of Ukkadam flyover from Athupalam to Oppanakkara Street as planned during the previous DMK regime instead of beginning from Karumbukkadai. Action should be initiated to give proper compensation to the residents who were affected due to the flyover construction. Singanallur MLA N. Karthik presided over the meeting.
