Bus shelters are being set up close to Chennai Metro Rail stations along Anna Salai to make it easier for commuters to switch modes of transport.
The decision to move them close to the Metro stations was taken at a recent meeting in which the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metro Rail officials took part.
An inspection was carried out by officials of the three agencies and, based on it, the bus shelters are being shifted or modified to create easy access to the Metro.
As part of the bus shelters project, new facilities have been set up near Metro stations in Teynampet, Saidapet, Nandanam and AG-DMS, a senior civic official said. All along Anna Salai, the MTC and Metro will work with the civic body to ensure easy access between the two public transport systems, officials said.
More bus shelters
Elsewhere in the city, the Corporation will be installing 21 bus shelters, where old ones have been completely damaged.
They will come up in the Teynampet, Kodambakam and Adyar zones.
New bus shelters would come up on Velachery Bypass Road near Phoenix Mall, Triplicane police station, C.V. Raman bus stop in Alwarpet, Kesari School in T. Nagar, Semmozhi Poonga bus stop on Cathedral Road and at Vapalani Murugan Koil bus stop. Work would beover by the first week of August, officials said.
However, commuters complain that in several places, such as Chintadripet, Ashok Nagar and Egmore, the stainless-steel bus shelters are in a poor condition, the fibre roof is leaking and the seats are damaged.
