Engineers suspended

for failure to repair road

The government has placed PWD assistant executive engineer Sajna S.J. and assistant engineer Sajeevkumar A.B. for failure to carry out maintenance work on the Palarivattom-Kakkanad Civil Line road. Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran said the two engineers had been placed under suspension pending inquiry for not completing work despite allocation of funds.

Toddler drowns in pond

A one-and-a-half-year-old girl drowned in a pond near her house at Alapra in Perumbavoor on Monday. The deceased was identified as Aimy, daughter of Nobi Mathew of Allapra. The incident occurred around 9.30 a.m. when she strayed out of the house. The body was handed over to relatives after post-mortem.

Youth Congress march turns violent

A march taken out by the Youth Congress protesting against the government’s decision to issue licence to distilleries and breweries turned violent here on Monday. The march, led by the Ernakulam and Chalakudy parliamentary committees of the Youth Congress, began around 11.45 a.m. from a location near St. Albert’s College, but the protesters were stopped by the police at Madhava Pharmacy Junction. Later, a scuffle ensued between the police and protesters, and it was followed by the deployment of water canon to disperse the mob. The police arrested Youth Congress president Dean Kuriakose and two others for obstructing their duty. They were later remanded in judicial custody.

Elected chamber president

The 121st annual general meeting of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, held here last week, elected Madhusudan Gupta as its president and Sunny L. Malayil as vice president for 2018-2019. The meeting, held under the chairmanship of Rajesh Agarwal, president of the chamber, also appointed Akshay Agarwal, Chirag J. Shah, Shabbir H. Kapasi, T.R. Sikhileshan, and V. Ramalingam as managing committee members.
