The BJP has termed the ongoing agitation seeking resumption of wide-bodied aircraft at Calicut International Airport as ‘political drama’, claiming that a decision on the issue is expected by July 30.
In a statement, party district president T.P. Jayachandran said on Thursday that some people who had not been involved in the issue for long had now come up with protests at a time when the work on the renovation of the runway had been completed and the authorities had decided to resume operations of Code E aircraft.
He claimed that Union Minister of State K.J. Alphons and the then party State president Kummanam Rajasekharan had met Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu to discuss the issue.
A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation inspected the airport and the length of the Runway End Safety Area had been increased from 90 m to 240 m to enable landing Boeing 777-200. By July 30, the services of wide-bodied aircraft would resume, he added.
