In the absence of adequate seating facility for passengers at the municipal bus stand here, people have been forced to sit on the platforms.
Over 1.10 lakh passengers use the bus stand every day to reach destinations within the district and in other districts. Also, buses are being operated to places in Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh from the bus stand. However, inadequate number of chairs continues to be a major concern for the passengers. V. Kuppammal (65) of Sivagiri says she boards the bus regularly at the bus stand, but has to sit on the platform most of the time.
Each platform has chairs that can accommodate 15 to 25 passengers at a given time. During the morning and evening hours, students, workers and people throng the bus stand in large numbers and chairs are not sufficient to meet even 20 % of the passengers, says T. Madhanagopalan, who works at a private college.
While buses are frequently available for Tirupur, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Salem and Gobichettipalayam, frequency of buses is less towards Tiruchi, Palani and Bengaluru. Hence, passengers going to these places have to wait for at least 30 minutes to board the buses. Also, frequency of town buses to Sivagiri, Kodumudi, Palliyuthu and Chennimalai and to other interior villages is very less and passengers have to wait for long hours. “There are less than 15 chairs available on the platforms from where town buses are operated,” says M. Kavitha of Ellakadai. Most of the passengers wanted the Corporation, which maintains the bus stand, to improve the basic amenities. When contacted, officials said that efforts would be made to improve the amenities soon.
