30 Islamic, Pak. channels to go off air in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a ban on airing of at least 30 “unpermitted” TV channels, including Pakistan-based news and entertainment channels, in the State.

The order, issued by the Additional District Commissioner, Srinagar, on July 12, was implemented on Wednesday. Cable operators claimed they were approached by the authorities in Srinagar to stop “telecast of banned private satellite channels within the jurisdiction of the Srinagar district”.

The J&K government’s home department on July 2 came up with the directive that “it has become necessary and expedient in the larger interest of public and maintenance of peace and tranquillity to prohibit transmitting TV channels which are not permitted by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting”.

The list of banned channels included Zakir Naik’s Peace TV, Islamic channels like ARY, QTV, Madni Channel, Noor TV, Hadi TV and Paigam among others. Pakistan-based entertainment channels like Hum TV, ARY Zindagi, Hum Sitaray, ARY Musik and 10 news channels also figure in the list handed over to the operators.
