Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday launched the Potharlanka Lift Irrigation scheme envisaged to provide water to 5,000 acres in the lanka villages in the Vemuru Assembly constituency.
Mr. Naidu, in the presence of Ministers D. Umamaheswara Rao, N. Ananda Babu, and P. Pulla Rao, and Collector K. Sasidhar, switched on the pumps to let out water.
Locals recalled that the scheme, for which sanctions had been given in 1996, was completed nearly after 22 years.
Using gravity, water could be pumped through underground pipes providing water to 11 villages.
The Chief Minister also conceded to the request made by Mr. Ananda Babu to waive off interest on the loan taken to construct the scheme.
Out of Rs. 48 lakh, which was the share of the farmers, Mr. Naidu agreed to waive off Rs. 25 lakh. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Naidu asserted that the Polavaram Project would be completed within one year.
