Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid, 50, has hit back at Alastair Campbell, 63, after he bizarrely tweeted and demanded the ITV presenters stop referring to Prime Minister Boris Johnson by just his first name. The former Labour MP tweeted the demand after confirming that he is set to join the ITV breakfast show for a short stint next month – but made it clear he wasn’t a permanent replacement for former host Piers Morgan.

In view of her 827,200 followers, Susanna coolly responded to her politician’s demand.

She wrote: “This’ll make things interesting when @campbellclaret joins me @gmb for a few days in May….”

Earlier today it was confirmed that the former Downing Street Press Secretary is set to join GMB for a stint in the coming weeks.

The ITV host’s reply was in response to a tweet from the political strategist, which demanded that the GMB presenters stop calling the Prime Minister by his first name.

He wrote: “Stop calling him BORIS …. @gmb,” for his 649,000 followers to see.

Stunned social media users quickly took to the comments in bafflement at what the presenters were meant to call the PM.

One wrote: “What are you supposed to call him?”

Replying to the mental health campaigner tweet, another added: “Boris is his name,” followed by a laughing emoji.

Others however agreed with the former Labour MP.

One social media user wrote that the lead of government should be referred to as: “The Prime Minister or Prime Minister Johnson. Simple. Be respectful of the job holder.”

Another agreed: “Call him Boris Johnson, Johnson, or the Prime Minister. I agree with Alistair Campbell.”

The former MP has been confirmed to appear for a stint on the show and this morning took to Twitter to announce the news to his followers.

He wrote: “So weird to be wearing a suit and tie.

“Been in at @GMB checking the presenter chair and seeing if I can cope with the tech!

“And no I am NOT the new @piersmorgan BUT I will be presenting alongside @susannareid100 May 10-12 thru Mental Health Awareness Week. 1/2,”(sic) he added.

After sharing images on the set of the breakfast show as well as with Charlotte Hawkins and Susanna Reid, the former spokesperson said he was looking forward to standing in for the former host Piers.

He continued: “In addition to usual news, views and interviews hoping to draw attention to MH [mental health] Issues which GMB have long championed.

“But also keen to get stuck in on all the big political stories post May 6 elections.

“No piano! Wish I’d been on this a.m!#johnlewisnightmare #Nolan #wallpaper 2/2.”

The political strategist worked as Tony Blair’s campaign director for his third election win in 2005 and is the chief interviewer for GQ magazine.
