Suranne Jones reveals crippling anxiety over taking the tube after breakdown

Suranne Jones has revealed she suffers from anxiety when taking the tube after struggling with her mental health following the death of her parents.

The Vigil and Doctor Foster actress, 43, has been open about her decision to undergo treatment for anxiety, which she has struggled with for years.

Posting a photo to Instagram of herself in a black face mask and dark glasses, she wrote: "Nervous on the tube this morning. My anxiety can spike and catch me unawares but I knew there were two beautiful women on the other side who just filled me up with love. Take time to be with your friends."

The actress sadly lost her father Chris in January after a battle with coronavirus and Suranne's mother Jenny tragically passed away five years ago.

The star has been open in her experience of getting support for anxiety and depression as she said she wanted to help end the taboo around mental health treatment.

Previously speaking about her mental health on Ferne Cotton's Happy Place podcast, she said: "I’m on medication and, at some point, I’ll aim to get off that.

"I think there’s a huge taboo around it and I wasn’t going to say it but I decided last night I should because it’s important I think."

The former Coronation Street actress Suranne explained she was initially placed on the medication after her mum's death.

Suranne had become too unwell and her husband, Laurence Akers, was unable to help her. She then suffered a breakdown in 2018.

But, her condition improved as she undertook the starring role on BBC drama Gentleman Jack and was able to come off her medication.

Earlier this year, Suranne returned to her treatment following the death of her dad, which she said she was "still coming to terms with" in May.

The actress bravely spoke about her anxiety and how it effects her in social situations, as she ends up sweating and speaking in a posh voice.

Reflecting on one particular gathering, she explained: "The sweat started and the voice came out. I was like, 'Oh God, stop doing that!'."

Suranne recently had the opportunity to explore anxiety on-screen in a new starring role in Channel 4's I Am Victoria. The actress has said the new role as a "perfect" wife battling her inner demons made her realise how important it is to take care of your mental health.

She explained: "Looking after your mental health is everything. It’s like going to the gym, it’s about looking after yourself, recognising changes before what happened to me during Frozen, and what happens to Victoria.

"I am fortunate to have been in therapy a very long time, but now and again the pressure builds up.

"I had a moment filming of Gentleman Jack when I needed to time off and see a doctor, to really deal with demons in my life."
