The award-winning actor told The Sun: ‘That was the first time I’ve used the C-word in a film. I tried to get it cut. I’d never use it myself.

‘I didn’t feel comfortable with it. I never swear in films. If you tread on my foot in real life, I will swear. I am the son of a Billingsgate fish porter, so I grow up hearing it. But I would never use the word.’

Michael – who plays gang leader Brian Reader in the movie – also revealed that as soon as the age of the criminals who pulled off the heist was revealed, he knew he would be asked to be in a film about them one day.

And the movie – which also stars Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent – caused quite a stir, even before it’s release.

Working Title’s film based on the infamous Hatton Garden raid of 2015, came under fire for glorifying the theft of £14 million. Victim’s of the burglary came together to voice their disapproval with the new adaptation.

David Joffe, treasurer of the London Diamond Bourse, a gems trading floor which represents numerous jewellers and shops, told The Telegraph that victims were furious a new film had been made.

He said: ‘I don’t think there are any gentleman robbers and I certainly wouldn’t call any robbers heroes.

‘Unfortunately these films glorify such things. I wouldn’t want them made in the first place – it gives robbers credence. The victims are very annoyed about it.’

The film will be the third time the events have been dramatised, while three separate books have also been written about it.

New film: Sir Michael Caine (pictured, centre) is one of a number of high-profile actors involved in the film. He will play Brian Reader, 77, who was jailed for six years following the raid
