Kate Garraway: Derek ‘may never come out’ of coma says Piers
Kate Garraway, 53, has like many across the UK, had a tough old year after her husband Derek Draper was admitted to hospital after contracting coronavirus back in March 2020. He is still seriously ill and Kate has been trying to get to grips with life as a single parent, and praised her co-star Ranvir Singh for giving her a guiding hand along the way.

Kate, who has been married to Derek since 2005, share children Darcey and Billy together, but she admitted that she’s struggling to cope being the sole parent.
In a recent interview, she opened up about her current situation.
“I’m not sure I am coping! I honestly don’t know how single mums do it; it’s just so hard,” she said.
“A lot of the time I find myself thinking, ‘What would Derek say?’ and ‘What would Derek do?’ I’m lucky that I’m being supported by lots of friends, too, and Ranvir [Singh] has been really helpful because she’s been operating as a single mum since her son, Tushaan, was very little.

“I asked her, ‘How do you do it?’ and she said, ‘You just have to accept that you can’t do everything.’”
Over the Christmas period, Kate took the children to see Derek for the first time since he was admitted to hospital, after rules and regulations prevented them from seeing him.
But she revealed that now we’re back in national lockdown, there are more stringent measures in place and she wasn’t sure when they would get to see Derek again.
But she told Good Housekeeping that they are “undoubtedly in a more positive place”.
“We’re really hoping we’re on some kind of trajectory of improvement,” she told the publication.
“It’s very much two steps forward, three steps back, but if I think back to where we were in March 2020, when Derek’s lungs were solid with infection and his infection rates were the highest doctors had seen in anyone who has lived, we’re undoubtedly in a more positive place.”
Most recently, Kate was warned by doctors that Derek may never come out of his coma.
Speaking on GMB on Tuesday morning, host Piers Morgan gave the heartbreaking update as he spoke about the severity of Derek’s situation, urging viewers to continue to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously.

“We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek is still in a coma from COVID. He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this, and it’s heartbreaking,” he said.
“It has hit right here on our show… It’s hit a lot of people now. 100,000 people or more have now lost their lives – think about how many family members they all have. Multiply that and you’re getting into millions of people directly affected by COVID-19.”
He added: “We’ve got to take this seriously and we’ve got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That’s the only way through this.”
Kate spoke about her feelings on Good Morning Britain last week, saying that she has been feeling “low” since Christmas.

She admitted: “I’ve been a bit low since Christmas, physically low. I’ve felt like I’m slightly physically at the end of my tether. I’ve had to re-group a bit.”
The former I’m A Celebrity star recently announced that she is writing a new book called The Power of Hope about her and her family’s experiences during Derek’s fight against COVID-19, which is due for release in April.
Speaking about the book, she said: “By telling the story of Derek’s illness and how it has altered our lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering.”
