Meghan Markle could’ve had Diana’s ring – but ‘selfless’ Harry ‘prevented it’

The ring Prince William used to propose to Kate Middleton was his late mum Princess Diana's, but it was originally his brother Harry who had inherited the piece of jewellery.

The ring, which has an estimated value or around £390,000, features a 12 carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 round diamonds and is set in 18 karat white gold.

The famous ring was one of a number of items that William and Harry requested to keep following their mother's death, with many royal fans assuming it was William who inherited the ring.

However, Diana's former butler and confidante Paul Burrell, has revealed that it was Harry who requested to keep the ring.

Over the years, Paul has appeared in a number of documentaries telling the story of his late friend's life, and on one he shared the story of how the ring ended up on Kate's finger, rather than Meghan Markle's.

Paul recalled that the young Prince William said: "I’d like mummy’s Cartier watch, the one that Grandpa Spencer gave to her for her 21st birthday." While Harry asked for the ring.

The former royal butler remembered that Harry had once said: "I remember when I held mummy's hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big."

However, later, Harry gave the ring to his brother so he could use it to propose to Kate. Paul praised this kindness, saying: "His one thing he kept from his mother, he gave to his brother. That's selfless, kind, and exactly who Diana was."

The sparkling ring was presented to Kate in 2010 when Prince William popped the question in a romantic getaway in Kenya.

But, it was reported that shortly before the Royal wedding in April 2011, Kate had the famous ring altered as she found the band was too big and "turning on her finger."

A source told The Sun at the time: "A bride's worst nightmare is looking down and seeing her ring has fallen off.

"One can only image how this is magnified when you are marrying the future King of England."

Over a decade on from their big day at Westminster Abbey, Kate now wears the ring alongside a wedding band, made of Welsh gold.

And when it came time for Harry to propose, he designed a ring for Meghan that incorporated two diamonds sourced from his late mother's collection.

At the time, Prince Harry told the BBC: "The little diamonds on either side are from my mother's jewellery collection to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together."

Meghan added: "Obviously not being able to meet his mom, it's so important to me to know that she's a part of this with us."
