Kevin Clifton, 37, has been holed up at home with his girlfriend Stacey Dooley, 33, during the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Latin champion – who quit Strictly Come Dancing back in March – has opened up about his worries amid the current closure of UK theatres.

The performer explained that while “everything is up in the air” he remains unsure about his future on stage.

Speaking on his self-titled podcast, The Kevin Clifton Show, the ballroom professional was joined by Scottish-native and comedian Susan Calman.

The pair were partnered together on Strictly back in 2017, where they reached Week 10 in the dance competition.

Discussing the closure of theatres across the country, Susan exclaimed: “None of us know what’s going to happen, do we?”

Kevin replied: “Absolutely, I made a big decision this year where I left Strictly Come Dancing.

“I wanted to explore my theatre career a bit more, I had been doing musicals.”

Kevin was due to star in the Strictly Ballroom musical but the tour has since been postponed for the remainder of the year.

“As you know, Strictly Ballroom is absolutely my favourite thing. It was my absolute dream. I wanted to get on playing the lead in that show,” Kevin said.

“I’ve always wanted it and I finally got offered [the role] and was due to start in September. That was the big factor in leaving Strictly this year.”

However, as the UK Government began to ease restrictions following the nationwide lockdown, arts and culture venues including theatres have remained closed.

The dancer said: “Now this has happened and they’ve picked up the show [Strictly Ballroom] a whole year later, so we’re due to open in September 2021.

“I was supposed to have done a two-month tour of Burn The Floor. That didn’t happen and we’ve postponed that for now.”

Kevin finished: “We don’t know when theatres are going to come back. Everything is just so up in the air.”

Theatres have been closed since lockdown began in March and, despite innovations such as National Theatre Live and YouTube live streams, the performing arts have been hard hit by this crisis.

Once shows are finally able to resume, they will have to adhere to stringent rules on social distancing.

The lockdown began just weeks after Kevin announced he was leaving Strictly after seven years on the programme.

Kevin first joined the BBC show in 2013 and won the main show for the first time with his now girlfriend Stacey Dooley back in 2018.

The pair began dating months after the couple lifted the Glitterball Trophy two years ago.

Speaking to The Guardian, Stacey said: “Kev and I have decided not to go into too much detail about our private lives because you can’t really indulge that and then ask for privacy.

“What I am happy so say is Kev is amazing, I’m happy, life happens, I’ve got an amazing career and I’m very lucky”.
