Karyn Parsons, best known for her role as Hilary Banks in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, reunited with her fellow co-stars to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary last year. The 54-year-old was thrilled to see the likes of Will Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro and Janet Hubert, but admitted she wasn’t so keen on the production plan.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the cast were kept apart in separate hotel rooms and were not allowed to see each other until they reunited back on set in front of the cameras.
“I wanted to go and hang out in the bar with Alfonso,” the actress spilled.
“So yeah, I was a little frustrated that when we first hung out the cameras were around.”
But Karyn said the cast swiftly forgot the cameras were there as it was like they had never left the famous set.
One thing that surprised the Hilary Banks star about the reunion, was the extent of Janet Hubert’s problems on and after the show.
The actress played aunt Viv on the sitcom from 1990 until the end of its third season in 1993.
Reports at the time claimed she was axed from the series, however it was later revealed she decided not to return.
She alleged that creator Will had pushed her out of the show.
At the reunion, the pair finally put their differences aside and buried the hatchet.
Janet opened up on her struggles after the show, where she claimed she had “no one” after giving birth to her first child and was disowned by her loved ones and the industry.
She told Will: “When I left the show, I had this new baby and no one, family disowned me, Hollywood disowned me.
“My family said, ‘You’ve ruined our name’.”

Will was taken aback by her revelations and offered his support, which she accepted.
Karyn spilled: “It was surprising to hear what her experience had been like on the show, a lot of things I didn’t know had been going on.
“I knew it was frustrating that there was all this tension over the years, after she left the show and was replaced.”
Janet also reunited with Daphne Maxwell Reid, who replaced her on the sitcom.
Karyn said she was left feeling emotional after seeing the pair shared a hug at the reunion.
“It makes me want to cry right now,” she added.
“I remember feeling [like] Oh my God this was the healing we all needed, not just between the people that were bickering and angry, the whole show kind of had a bit of weight pushed down on it because of that sour area that had not been tended to.”
While there are currently no plans for more Fresh Prince episodes, the actress is currently back on screen in her husband Alexandre Rockwell’s new film Sweet Thing.
The film is an intimate and aching family show, described by Quentin Tarantino as one of the most powerful new films he’s seen in years.
It is available to watch digitally and in cinemas nationwide (UK & Ireland).
