Chip and Joanna Gaines realized that they may have missed a golden opportunity while being busy with “Fixer Upper.”
While appearing at the 2019 Discovery Upfront presentation on Wednesday at Alice Tully Hall, the stars opened up about their unnamed new network coming in 2020, but it was Chip who realized limiting themselves to a real estate empire might have been a mistake while their family continued to grow.
“What a whirlwind of a couple of 18 months. A lot of you might know our story,” Chip said on stage. “We decided to take some time off from ‘Fixer Upper’ and spend a little time with the family. We have recently brought a now-9-month-old beautiful little baby [Crew Gaines]. He’s a funny baby.”
Talking with various Discovery executives about their partnership with the BBC, Chip came to learn about a series named “The Mating Game.”
“One of the programs that they were talking about with the BBC was ‘The Mating Game,’ and I was literally like, ‘Oh my gosh we should’ve been king in that! We were nine months early for that!’”
Jokes about his huge family aside, Chip couldn’t believe how much life has changed over the past decade and gushed about his children.
“We had brought a beautiful baby boy home about nine months ago. He’s changed our life,” Chip shared. “It’s now number five so we got four kids that were very close in age. That all happened before we started the show ‘Fixer Upper.’”
“Unbeknownst to me when we took on the assignment of ‘Fixer Upper’ itself, I thought this was like this get-rich-quick opportunity, so I was really excited about spending a couple hours a week doing what they call ‘television’ and running our business.”
