X Factor's Louis Tomlinson says One Direction is "a corny name" and the boys weren't fans of it

Fans will learn a lot about Louis Tomlinson during this year’s X Factor including his proclivity for saying “lad”, his self-deprecating sense of humour, and the fact that he never liked his band name One Direction.

The 26-year-old singer makes his debut on the judging panel this year with Simon Cowell and fellow new additions Robbie Williams and Ayda Fields.

The first episode sees him greet an aspiring boy band called No Labels – “Alright, lads?” – and reveal his true feelings about his own group name.

When Ayda asks No Labels why they went for the name, they reply: “We’re all so different, so we didn’t want to get put in just one single genre.”

This prompts Louis to tell them: “The thing is with a name… I don’t think any of us were ever a massive fan of One Direction.. If you think about the name, it’s a pretty corny name.”

Former One Directioner Harry Styles admitted last year that it was him who came up with the name when the band were created on the ITV show back in 2010.

“I think it was me,” Styles told CBS Sunday Morning. “I know they’re [Louis, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik] not here to defend anything else, but it was me. I thought it sounded good. We threw around names for a little bit, and I honestly don’t know.

“I suggested it and everyone was like, ‘Yeah we like that’ and then it kind of stuck, and that was what it was.”

Find out if No Label were as atrocious good as their name when X Factor returns this weekend.

X Factor returns on Saturday night at 8pm on ITV.
