PM Modi urges Opposition, political leaders, film personalities to ensure larger voter turnout

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday exhorted his political rivals, Bollywood celebrities, sports and business personalities to encourage greater voter participation in the upcoming LoK Sabha elections.

“I appeal to @RahulGandhi, @MamataOfficial, @PawarSpeaks, @Mayawati, @yadavakhilesh, @yadavtejashwi and @mkstalin to encourage increased voter participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. A high turnout augurs well for our democratic fabric,” said one tweet by Mr. Modi.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responded saying he was happy that the Prime Minister was also appealing to the “Maha Gathbandhan for “Maha Parivartan” (big change). “I too urge all the Indian citizens to turn up in large numbers for voting and elect new Prime Minister,” he said on Twitter.

The Prime Minister also called upon Chief Ministers K. Chandrashekar Rao, Naveen Patnaik, H.D. Kumaraswamy and N. Chandrababu Naidu, besides Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

In a message to former President Pranab Mukherjee, Mr. Modi said: “Being among India’s most prolific statesmen and someone who has been active in politics for decades, you would understand the power of a vote. I request you to appeal to the people to enrich the festival of democracy by participating in large numbers.”

The Prime Minister also reached out to film personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachhan, Shah Rukh Khan, A.R. Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan and Karan Johar.

“It is time to inspire and motivate youth in your own Andaz to vote so that we can strengthen Apna Democracy & Apna country,” was his mesaage to Salman Khan and Aamir Khan.

Mr. Modi tagged another message to Akshay Kumar, Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, also requesting actors Mohanlal and Nagarjuna to create greater voter awareness and strengthen democracy.

“Requesting @deepikapadukone, @aliaa08 and @AnushkaSharma to urge people to vote in large numbers for the coming elections,” read a tweet.

Another tweet said: “Dear @BajrangPunia, @shankar_live and @BajpayeeManoj, Your talent and skill has entertained millions, and made India proud. Your voice is respected widely. Please lend strength to our democracy by increasing voter awareness and inspiring people to vote.”

The Prime Minister’s message to Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhavan and Vicky Kaushal was: “It is time to tell them: Apna Time Aa Gaya Hai (Our time has come) and that it is time to turn up with high Josh to a voting centre near you.”

Mr. Modi made the same requests to sports personalities like Sachin Tendulkar, M.S. Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, V.V.S. Laxman, Anil Kumble, Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth.

Through a series of tweets, Mr. Modi also reached out to top businessmen and spiritual leaders to bring more awareness among voters.

Among those tagged were industrialists Ratan Tata and Anand Mahindra, besides BSE chief Ashish Chauhan.

“Dear @SriSri ji, @SadhguruJV ji, @yogrishiramdev ji and Sri M, Spiritual leaders like you inspire many through words and work. I request you to also inspire people towards greater democratic participation,” said Mr. Modi.
