Lok Sabha elections 2019: Day before filing nomination papers, PM Narendra Modi to hold roadshow in Varanasi today

Padma awardees, industrialists, musicians, artists, and artisans will participate in a roadshow in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, on Thursday, a day before he is due to file his nomination papers for re-election to the Lok Sabha seat.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders, including Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) politicians from Tamil Nadu will be in attendance when Modi files his nomination papers.

The road show on Thursday will begin from the Banaras Hindu University gates, where Modi will pay tributes to BHU founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the road show would be a “never before, never after” event.

The BJP carried out an extensive door-to-door invitation drive across the city on April 21 and invited all citizens including citybased Padma awardees, local industrialists, literary figures and ordinary people to participate in the event.

BJP leader Ashok Dhawan visited Muslim-dominated Madanpura and Sonarpura areas to invite residents to the roadshow.

BJP vice president of the Varanasi region, Dharmendra Singh said, “All Kashiites have warmly accepted our invitation for the road show.”

Prominent among those invited are vocalist Padma Bhushan Pandit Chhannu Lal Mishra, classical vocalist and Jaltarang artiste Padma Shri Rajeshwar Acharya, social activist Padma Shri Rajnikant, basketball player Padma Shri Prashanti Singh and folk singer Padma Shri Heera Lal Yadav. Pandit Mishra, one of the proposers of Modi’s nomination for the seat in 2014, said he would participate.

Ashok Gupta, Keshav Jalan, Deenanath Jhunjhunwala and RK Chaudhary are among the prominent city-based industrialists who have been requested to join the road show.

Nasir Abbas, grandson of Bharat Ratna shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan, said, “I want to be a proposer for Modi’s nomination. I am waiting for the communication from the party. But before that I would participate in the roadshow.”

BJP national chief Amit Shah, who landed in Varanasi on April 23, is camping in the city and will leave after the nomination process is completed. He said, “The road show will begin from the BHU gate and will culminate at Dashashwamedh Ghat…At the ghat, Modi will participate in Ganga Arti.”

On April 26, Modi will visit the Baba Kaal Bhairav temple, offer prayers and leave for filing his nomination papers at 11.30 am. He is also likely to offer prayers to Kashi Vishwanath temple before that. The Samajwadi Party has fielded Shalini Yadav as the candidate of the SP-BSP alliance, the Congress is yet to name its nominee for the seat.
