Two masked men robbed three women of 30 sovereigns and ₹30,000 at knifepoint from a house in Velayuthapuram under Pandalgudi police station limits on Friday night.
The police said that Subhashini, 30, wife of R. Alaguraj, 35, who is working in Singapore, was living in a house in Velayuthapuram along with her mother Kannagi, 55, and her mother-in-law, Padmavati, 66, and two children.
When the three women were in the house, located along the Madurai-Thoothukudi national highway, two unidentified persons barged in at around 9 p.m. One of them brandished a knife and the other a piece of glass. The police said that one of the two had masked his face with a monkey cap, while the other had covered his face with a towel.
The duo threatened the women with dire consequences if they did not part with their valuables. The frightened women showed little resistance and allowed the robbers to lay their hands on the gold and cash kept in the almirah. However, the robbers did not touch any of the gold ornaments the women were wearing.
Within seconds, the robbers fled the scene.
As the robbers had warned them against raising an alarm, the frightened women did not come out of the house for sometime. The Pandalgudi police are investigating.
